CNA Working Days - What's Their Workload?

Anybody who intends to become a certified nursing assistant will surely like to know what the working conditions in a hospital or a clinic are like. A nursing assistant's work is not a very thrilling one but the mental satisfaction it offers in helping the poor patients is gratifying. They have a very busy work schedule.

They work for 6 to 8 hours a day, constantly vigilant and alert while they are on duty. They don't have time to do anything else other than attending to the patients' needs while on duty. We already know that the hospital and health clinics are always filled with patients and we can just imagine the workload of the nursing assistants. Usually on a day shift they will have to bathe the patients and see that everything goes well with the patients.

Feeding the patients at the right times and keeping the patients and the surrounding hygienically fit are also the duties of a nursing assistant. A patient may call the CNA at any time and the call must be answered immediately. Such calls may be related to changing the sleeping position or the feeding needs of the patient. It mostly happens with diabetic patients whose sugar levels are to be continuously monitored after every meal and diet to be changed, if found necessary.

Other patients might call you for checking the functioning of their body organs which are in disorder. You already have a fair idea about all these since you are a trained CNA. It is the duty of the nursing assistant to furnish the doctor with all necessary data related to the patients. It includes test results and any other symptoms, making it easy for the doctor to prescribe treatment. In case there is a sudden change in the condition of a patient, it is the responsibility of the CNA to notify the doctor immediately.

A CNA on the night shift has to see that an atmosphere conducive to sleeping is created for the benefit of the patients. In addition to feeding the patients, the nursing assistant has to continue to observe them throughout the night, especially the seriously ill patients. The CNAs working in a large hospital will have more paper work than a nursing assistant working in a small nursing home.

The remuneration is proportionate to the workload of the CNA. Thus the life of a nursing assistant is not as bad as you might think and the experience you gain will be an asset for your future life.
